Specimen Required
Draw blood in a SST. Centrifuge, separate serum from cells within 2 hours and send 1.0 mL serum (0.2 mL minimum) refrigerated in a screw-capped plastic vial.

Alternate Specimen
Serum: Red-top

Rejection Criteria
Severely lipemic, contaminated, heat-inactivated or hemolyzed specimens.

Semi-Quantitative Enzyme Immunoassay

Stability
Room Temperature: 2 days; Refrigerated: 14 days; Frozen: 1 year

Reference Range
<=8 U: Negative-No significant level of detectable E. histolytic IgG antibody.
9-11 U: Equivocal-Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful.
>=12 U: Positive-IgG antibody to E. histolytica detected which may indicate a current or past infection.
