CHOLESTEROL, LDL

Specimen Required
Draw blood in a SST tube. Centrifuge and separate from cells within 3 hours. Send 1.0 mL serum (0.5 mL minimum) refrigerated in a screw-capped plastic vial.

Alternate Specimen
Serum: Red-top
Plasma: EDTA, heparin

Rejection Criteria
Lipemic (>1500 triglycerides) and hemolyzed samples will be rejected.
Citrate and oxalate plasma.

Stability
Room Temperature: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen (-70°C): 3 months. Samples should only be frozen once.

Reference Range
Optimal: <100 mg/dL
Low risk: 100-129 mg/dL
Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL
High: 160-189 mg/dL
Very High: >190 mg/dL
