Specimen Required
Patient should fast overnight. Draw blood in a SST. Centrifuge, separate serum from cells and freeze immediately. Send 1.0 mL serum (0.5 mL minimum) frozen in a screw-capped plastic vial.

Alternate Specimen
Plasma: Heparin
Serum: Red-top

Rejection Criteria
Grossly lipemic specimens, grossly hemolyzed specimens, EDTA plasma.

Room Temperature: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 14 days

Reference Range
Adult: <10 ng/mL
Reference intervals have not been formally verified in-house for pediatric and adolescent patients. The published literature indicates that reference intervals for adult, pediatric, and adolescent patients are comparable.
