Specimen Required
Draw blood in a SST. Centrifuge, separate and send 1.0 mL serum (0.5 mL minimum) refrigerated in a screw-capped plastic vial.

Alternate Specimen
Serum: Red-top

Severely hemolyzed or lipemic specimens

Reference Range
Herpes Simplex IgG I Antibody:
<=0.90 Negative: No antibody detected
0.90-1.10 Equivocal: Repeat testing in 4-12 weeks
>=1.10 Positive: IgG antibody to HSV-I detected, which may indicate current or previous exposure
Herpes Simplex IgG II Antibody:
<=0.90 Negative: No antibody detected
0.90-1.10 Equivocal: Repeat testing in 4-12 weeks
>=1.10 Positive: IgG antibody to HSV-II detected, which may indicate current or previous exposure
Herpes Simplex I and/or II IgM
<=0.90: Negative: No antibody detected
0.91-1.09 Equivocal: Repeat testing in 4-12 weeks
>=1.10 Positive: IgM antibody to HSV I and/or II detected which may indicate current or reactivated infection
