Components
The preferred test to order for pregnant females is "Hexosaminidase A and Total Hexosaminidase, Leukocytes".

Specimen Required
Draw blood in a SST. Centrifuge, separate and send 1.0 mL serum (0.5 mL minimum) frozen in a screw-capped plastic vial. Serum assay results are not valid on pregnant females and will not be run.

Room Temperature: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: 30 days

>=16 yrs:   10.4-23.8 nmol/min/mL  
Hexosaminidase percent A, serum
<=15 yrs:   20-90%  
>=16 yrs:   56-80%  
reference values have not been established for patients <5 years of age.
