MYCOBACTERIA, CULTURE, with FLUOROCHROME SMEAR

Components
BOTH CODE (MC AND MCFS) MUST BE ORDERED AT THE SAME TIME. MCFS and MC CANNOT BE ORDERED INDIVIDUALLY.

Specimen Required
Collect sputum from a deep cough. Send 10.0 mL sputum (2.0 mL minimum) refrigerated in a sterile screw-capped plastic container. Instruct patient to gargle with water and cough deeply. Collect 3 consecutive early morning specimens 24 hours apart. Source of specimen is required.

Alternate Specimen
Urine (clean catch midstream or catheter collection): 50.0 mL (40.0 mL minimum)
Body fluid, CSF or aspirates: 3.0 mL (1.0 mL minimum)
10 gm stool from immunocompromised or HIV patient
Tissue (1-2 cm x 1-2 cm piece recommended) - place tissue and needle biopsies in sterile leak proof container with small amount of saline.
Gastric lavage: 5.0 mL in a sterile leak proof container, must be neutralized with sodium bicarbonate within 4 hours of collection (5.0 mL minimum)

Rejection Criteria
24 hour urine or sputum specimens, specimen in formalin or alcohol, leaking specimens, urine in preservative.
