Specimen Required
Patient Preparation: Patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours. Draw blood in a green sodium or lithium tube. Centrifuge, separate and send 3.0 mL plasma (2.0 mL minimum) frozen in an amber screw-capped plastic vial. PROTECT FROM LIGHT. CRITICAL FROZEN.

Plasma: EDTA

Rejection Criteria
Specimen not protected from light.
Plasma gel tube, Gross hemolysis

Extraction Scanning Spectrofluorometry/High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Stability
Room Temperature: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 7 days

Reference Range
<=1.0 mcg/dL
If total porphyrins are >1.0 mcg/dL, then porphyrins, Fractionation will be performed at an additional charge.
