Methodology

This test utilizes a reverse transcriptase real-time PCR procedure to detect the 5'-nontranslated region of the rhinovirus genome. This procedure will detect most, but not all of the >200 rhinovirus types. This procedure cannot differentiate the individual rhinovirus types. This procedure is significantly more sensitive than culture for rhinovirus detection. The analytical sensitivity of this assay is 200 copies/mL. A negative result does not rule out infection.
